Urine Donor Kick-Off

Posted by Julia Cavicchi on May 1, 2020

Film still from 'Mr. Toilet,' screened at this year's urine donor celebration.

Our annual Urine Donor Kick Off event went virtual on April 30th. Over 45 people joined us to celebrate our Urine Nutrient Reclamation Project (UNRP) and the urine donors who make it possible!

2019 Piss-Off winners were announced in multiple categories including; rookie of the year (for the most collected by a new donor), home collection donors, urine depot donors, the 100-gallon club, the 500-gallon club, and the 1,000-gallon club donors who have been participating in the project for many years. A home that has contributed 1,000 gallons of urine to the Rich Earth’s clean water and local fertilizer initiative has provided nutrients for an entire acre of hay – and conserved approximately 20,000 gallons of potable water.

Congratulations to Kate Lucy, Jonathan Sellers, & family and Betsy & Laura Williams for reaching the 1,000 gallon mark this year! And the all-around winner of the 2019 Zemel Cup was… Amy Frost!

This year we watched Mr. Toilet, a film made by Lily Zepeda about Jack Sim, a man who has dedicated his life to raising awareness about the dire need for sanitation around the world. His life story and efforts have led to the creation of the United Nations World Toilet Day on November 19, bringing the topic of poop and pee out of hiding and into public awareness. We were fortunate to have Lily join us after the film to tell of her experience making the film and answer questions from our donor community.

We strive to provide context for how our local UNRP project is relevant on a broader scale. People in India not only need toilets, but toilets that provide sustainable, productive sanitation solutions and we are part of creating new human “waste to resource” models.
