Nine Urine Pasteurizers Sold

Brightwater Tools, Rich Earth’s spin-off company focussed on developing building-scale wastewater nutrient recovery systems, has sold nine of their pasteurizers (patent pending) to partners across the US. It is the nation’s first pasteurizer designed specifically to treat urine according to US EPA regulations. (While urine from healthy people is pathogen free, sanitization is necessary for growing food for public consumption.) The availability of this pasteurizer on the market unlocks new opportunities for resource-oriented sanitation practitioners.

Customers (so far) include: Wasted*, University of Michigan, Stony Brook University, Cotuit Solar LLC, Cornell University, and MASSTC.

The Brightwater Pasteurizer removes pathogens from urine by raising its temperature to 80°C for 90 seconds in accordance with state regulations. The pasteurizer….
💧 Processes more than 50 gallons per day
💡 Consumes approximately the same amount of energy as an incandescent light bulb
🟢 Long-term testing has shown that nitrogen losses are negligible

At Cornell University, the pasteurizer has been used for research in Professor Rebecca Nelson’s lab. Lab Manager Ace Repka notes, “We have been using the pasteurizer extensively the past month and [h ]ave pasteurized around 1.5 IBC totes” – nearly 400 gallons of peecycling power!
