Rich Earth Urine Collector

This urine fertilizer collector is designed and handmade by the Rich Earth Institute in Brattleboro, VT. These watertight containers are easy to use for collecting and transporting to one of our Vermont urine depots or to your garden! They can be used by people of all genders and abilities, in conjunction with the pStyle or toilet hat, listed below. Urine Collection Funnel & Dispensing Spout  – [Purchase via Etsy]

The Urine Collection Funnel has threaded fittings to connect to one of the containers listed below. It includes a colorful ball that sits inside the funnel, creating a check-valve to minimize odors. Etsy purchases also include a Dispensing Spout which can be used for transferring your fertilizer to another container (such as a watering can) for use in your garden.

These containers are compatible with the funnel and spout listed above. Containers from other sources may not be compatible with this cap size. Containers are sold separately via Zoro:

Notes on Sizing:

  • People who typically sit to pee may prefer the 2.5 gallon (23 in. height) size.
  • People comfortable with standing to pee may prefer the 5 gallon (28 in. height) size.

Either size can be used in conjunction with a toilet hat or a stand-to-pee device such as the pStyle listed below.

Toilets for People ‘Pee Toilet’

Rich Earth is a local distributor for a sit-down peecycling toilet that we co-designed with Toilets for People, a local compost toilet business. These pee-only toilets offer an accessible alternative to our Urine Collectors. If you live in Windham County, you can buy one for pickup from our Research Center for a sliding scale $175-215. If not, you can purchase it directly from the Toilets for People website.

One of Rich Earth’s favorite stand-to-pee devices is the pStyle, a device that makes donating urine easy for those who need it. The simple design is easy to maneuver through clothing. The pStyle is great as an adventure accessory or for at-home use in combination with a Cubie & Funnel. *pStyles & cases are also available for purchase at the Rich Earth Institute (355 Old Ferry Road, Brattleboro, VT).

Towa

This nifty tool doubles as a watering can and a chamber pot! The Towa was invented and patented by Åsa Lövberg and is available through the Swedish startup, Guldkannan. It has a 10 liter capacity and a lid that seals tightly to protect the nitrogen and prevent odor. Towa has been on he market for 10 years and already has over 15,000 users around the world!

Separett has developed a suite of  urine diverting toilets as well as urine diverting toilet inserts which you can purchase from a local distributor.

Toilets for People 

TFP provides affordable, sustainable and ecological toilet solutions to those living off-grid in cabins, tiny houses, boats and RVs as well as organizations working in community development and disaster relief. Their signature product, the TFP Composting Toilet, uses a proven composting technology, urine diversion and active ventilation to produce a toilet that is comfortable, odorless and easy to maintain. They also sell pee-only sit down toilets, which can be an accessible option to collect urine fertilizer.

Cinderella Urinal

Cinderella Unisex Urinal is a waterless toilet solution specifically designed for urination. The urine is discharged to a suitable receptacle such as a sand filter or a collection tank. The urinal is waterless and 100% odorless.

Wostman

The Swedish company Wostman has designed a number of eco-toilets, including low flush urine-diverting toilets which have been favorably tested by the Rich Earth Institute. Visit Wostman’s ‘Find a Dealer’ page to look for toilet distributors near you!

WC-Dubletten

Also based in Sweden, the WC-Dubletten is another excellent urine diverting eco-toilet option.

Laufen

The Laufen SAVE! toilet uses an innovate ‘tea-pot’ effect to divert the urine. The Rich Earth Institute’s research center is currently piloting this toilet in the US–come give us a visit and try it out!

Kohler Waterless Urinal

This urinal was specifically designed to minimize splashing and can be made compatible with urine collection systems.

P-POD

This residential urinal is being developed by the Green Center, Inc. and is not yet available anywhere on the market.
