Peecycling in a Pandemic
As Arundhati Roy writes, the pandemic is a portal. Here at Rich Earth, we’ve been busy fostering regional and international partnerships for a re-imagined post-pandemic world, fitting the work we do into the larger puzzles of climate justice and global sanitation justice.
We would like to give a huge thank you to our donors here in Vermont who have helped keep the Urine Depot a safe, sanitary space in this time of COVID-19. We appreciate everyone following the new depot protocols by sanitizing hands and not touching surfaces in order to ensure that the depot remains a safe place to go. We’ve heard that many folks are collecting more now that they are home more often and we will continue to provide a safe facility to pump out urine containers.
Rich Earth staff is grateful to be able to work remotely for the most part. In addition to spending time on new projects, we have been fully engaged in grant writing and reporting season. Arthur continues to work at the Research Center and has been managing everything from urine collection, pasteurization and application to collecting mail and keeping the facility sanitized. When Abe joins him to work on additional projects, they wear masks and stay far apart.
Last year’s intern group was so successful and we’d hoped to continue to build our summer program. But we have decided not to host any interns until we can return to a more normal work flow. If all goes well we will welcome a fall intern from the University of Dayton as well as a new ECO-AmeriCorps service member.
We really miss being together so in addition to our many virtual meetings each week, we have a zoom lunch on Thursdays and we do NOT talk about work!
Finally, we are pleased to announce that we will be hosting our annual Rich Earth Summit ONLINE in early Fall 2020. Stay tuned for details on how to attend very soon!
