Award-winning NOWRA poster on Nitrogen Removal
Arthur Davis (our Operations Director) and Ryan Homeyer (our Research Associate) presented a poster at the National Onsite Wastewater Recycling Association (NOWRA) national conference, representing our spin-off company Brightwater Tools.
The poster, entitled Source Separation of Toilet Waste for Nitrogen and Phosphorus Recovery and Water Reuse, compares effluent characteristics from urine diversion, blackwater diversion, septic tanks, and septic tanks with nitrogen removal.
The poster features analysis of Brightwater’s key technology, freeze concentration. The Brightwater Tools freeze concentrator partially freezes and thaws urine to separate it into a concentrated fertilizer product and melt water that can be reused as non-potable greywater. The process model presented in the poster evaluates the practical effectiveness of freeze concentration to improve a building’s ecological impact by recovering nutrients in a resource-efficient manner at a wide range of scales.
The poster won NOWRA’s Emerging Professionals Committee’s Oral and Poster Presentation Competition. Congratulations, Arthur and Ryan!
