Urine-Diverting Flush Toilets

Both toilets listed below were designed to meet European plumbing specifications; no urine-diverting toilet is currently certified to US toilet standards. Variances from local plumbing boards/inspectors are therefore required for installation. Read more about toilet regulations.

Wostman EcoFlush

The Wostman EcoFlush uses a divided bowl to divert urine and flushing solids to a sewer or septic system. Rich Earth installs this toilet in our community-scale urine recycling program in Windham County, Vermont through a variance from the Vermont plumbing board.

Laufen Save!

The Laufen Save! uses a “urine trap” created by EOOS Design to divert urine through the ‘teapot effect,’ conducting urine towards a concealed outlet using only surface tension while flush water and solids run down the regular siphon. This toilet is ideal for public settings due to its decreased risk of user-error, but can be challenging to install due to the wall-mount design. Rich Earth has this toilet installed in our Research Center

Urine-Diverting Compost Toilets

Separett®

Separett® offers urine-diverting compost toilets and urine-diverting inserts to retrofit existing outhouses or composting toilets (such as the Phoenix) to a urine-diverting system.

Pheonix Composting Toilet

The Phoenix Composting Toilet is unique in having NSF 41 testing approval, meaning it is easier to permit for installation in states with stricter regulations such as Massachusetts.

Full Circle Composting System

The Full Circle System, designed by Rich Earth Institute Research Director and Brightwater Tools CTO Abe Noe-Hays, is a series of interchangeable wheeled composting containers located on the floor below the bathroom, typically in the basement. When the active container fills, it is disconnected from chute, capped, set aside nearby, connected to aeration, and allowed to compost for further retention time. Thinktank Waterless Composting Toilet

The Thinktank Toilet has a patented trap door design, which enables people to pee while seated or standing (most urine diverting toilets must be used while seated only). It is also uniquely airtight under normal operating conditions, drawing ventilation from the outside rather than inside air.

Nature Loo

The Nature Loo Alectura is a self-contained composting toilet with removable solids bins that’s perfect for folks living in tiny homes, yurts, or any dwelling with limited space below the floor. Rich Earth’s spin-off Brightwater Tools is the US distributor of this toilet.

Urinals / Pee-Only Toilets

Kohler Waterless Urinal

The Kohler Waterless Urinal was designed to minimize splashing and can be made compatible with urine collection systems.

Zero Flush Waterless Urinal

The Zero Flush Waterless Urinal from Aquatemp Environmental Solutions can also be plumbed to urine collection systems.

Toilets For People Pee Toilet

This Pee Toilet was designed by Toilets for People in collaboration with the Rich Earth Institute, offering a seated option for urine collection into 2.5 gallon storage containers.

Cinderella Urinal

The Cinderella Urinal is a pee-only toilet that plums to a separate storage tank.

P-Pod

The P-Pod urinal is designed by The Green Center to be installed flat in the wall of a bathroom. The door is normally closed and is opened only for use.

Marcelle

The Marcelle waterless urinal was custom designed to be adapted to female anatomy for a clean and quick experience. Watch the designer, Louise Raguet, present about Marcelle at our 2020 Summit.
